Nassim Taleb's book, taught concept by concept: rare events, cognitive bias, and acting without a forecast
What you'll learn
Requirements
Description
Most thinking about risk starts with a forecast. This course starts with the events that forecasts cannot see coming.
Nassim Taleb called them Black Swans: rare, high in impact, and explained away after the fact. His argument is that in money, careers and history a single event of that kind can outweigh everything that came before it, and that the human mind is built to miss them. You cannot forecast them. You can learn where they live, why you do not see them, and how to arrange your exposure so the damage a bad one can do has a limit.
Across 34 lectures in 12 modules you work through the book's core ideas one at a time. What a Black Swan is, and why it depends on who is watching. Mediocristan and Extremistan, the two kinds of randomness. The turkey problem and the round-trip fallacy. The narrative fallacy, memory and the pull of anecdotes. Silent evidence and survivorship bias. The ludic fallacy. The expert problem, and why plans miss in one direction. Where the bell curve works and where it fails, and what fractal randomness can and cannot tell you. Then what to do about it: preparation over prediction, the barbell, redundancy over debt, and the fourth quadrant.
Every concept gets three things: what it means, how it works, and where it stops applying. That third part is what keeps an idea from being used in the wrong place, and the course keeps Taleb's own qualifiers intact. Almost all social matters are from Extremistan, not all of them. Narrative is more accurate for Mediocristan; in Extremistan the story form itself misleads. Removing speculative debt removes roughly 90 percent of Black Swan risk in economic life, not in all of life.
This is for readers of Taleb who want the book taught rather than summarized, and for anyone whose work or money is exposed to rare events: investors, founders, managers, and people who make plans for a living. Nothing here is investment advice. The barbell and the debt lever are taught as Taleb's decision structures, in his own figures.
No prior reading is required, and no math beyond arithmetic. You get just over two hours of animated explainers, a quiz for each of the 12 modules, and a downloadable reference guide.
This course contains the use of artificial intelligence. The narration is my own recorded voice, the visuals are programmatically rendered from code, with licensed photographs and stock footage; none of the imagery is AI-generated.
